A podcast is a down-loadable audio or video file that is stored on
the internet. It is often referred to as "live audio" or "video
streaming." You can listen to podcasts right from your computer or you
can download that file for listening at a later time.
To makes things easier, there are free computer software programs
that allow you to "subscribe" to a podcast by adding it to a list of
shows that you want to be downloaded to your computer. When a new show
or podcast is released, the program will detect that and go online to
automatically download it to your computer.
The most popular program or podcast aggegator is Apple's iTunes. You can download
a free copy of iTunes from Apple's web site. Many people use this
program to subscribe to dozens of podcasts. iTunes downloads all your
subscribed podcasts and also synchronizes and copies them directly to
the Apple iPod. However, you do not need an iPod to listen to
podcasts. Any mp3 player will do just fine. If you are able to transfer
files form your computer to a mp3 device, you can listen to podcasts
that way too. Many people listen to podcasts, just like they listen to
music, while driving or at the gym.
